Students Have the Recipe for Success in National Culinary Student Competition
- Saturday, April 17, 2004
(Scottsdale,
AZ) April 26, 2004 Culinary students from across the
nation sent in recipes hoping they had the winning combination to score
in the prestigious Culinary Student Competition Awards
at the Scottsdale Culinary Festival. But only two were chosen. Scottsdales
own Nicholas Smith from Scottsdale Culinary Institute won for the best
entrée a spicy Curried Halibut with Saffron Basmati Pilaf.
Susan Stiles of Western Culinary Institute of Portland, Oregon took
the best appetizer category with her Cremini Mushroom Puffs. The two
were honored for their outstanding creativity and kitchen skills.
Students recipes were prepared by the Hyatt Gainey Ranch for tasting
by a panel of distinguished judges. Students were judged by the ability
of others to recreate the recipe, keeping the cost of ingredients under
$60 and the look and taste of the final product. The winning students
were announced and presented with $2,500 scholarships sponsored by Robert
Mondavi Winery in front of thousands at the Great Arizona Picnic.
The Scottsdale League
for the Arts (SLA) contributes to several Valley organizations,
